Myths And Facts About Artificial Sweeteners

Many questions come up when it comes to artificial sweeteners – do they cause cancer? Who can and cannot consume them? Which types are the most harmful? Because we want you to be informed and healthy, we are going to give you the answers of there and many more questions in this article:

1. Everyone can consume them.

Myth. People who have high blood pressure or kidney problems can’t consume artificial sweeteners because they have high concentration of sodium. Artificial sweeteners should be avoided by people who have a tendency to retain fluids again because of the sodium in their composition. Aspartame is prohibited for people who suffer from phenylketonuria, genetic damage, which is characterized by the inability of the body to utilize the essential amino acid – phenylalanine.

2. All artificial sweeteners are very low in calories and can be eaten without restriction.

Myth. It is important not to go overboard with them, and do not forget that low-calorie products also contain sweeteners.

3. Stevia and sucralose are the healthiest.

True. Stevia is a natural sweetener, so it can be consumed even by children and pregnant women. According to studies, sucralose also doesn’t carry health risks.

4. Artificial sweeteners are bad for health.

It depends. If you do not go overboard with them, they are not dangerous, but taking more than the recommended dose can lead to allergies and taste changes.

5. They cause cancer.

Myth. There is no scientific research to prove this theory.

6. They lead to gaining weight.

It depends. Sweeteners have little or no calories, but according to a research the regular consumption affects normal eating habits. When we eat food that has been artificially sweetened, our body expects to receive sugar, but it never comes. This triggers hunger and ultimately leads to weight gain.

The most popular artificial sweeteners are:

Aspartame

Aspartame is one of the most commonly used sweeteners, particularly in beverages, chewing gums and candy. It can be used in cakes, cookies and other cooked foods because it withstands high temperatures.

Saccharin and cyclamate

They withstand heat treatment and can be used to sweeten cakes.

Stevia

Natural sweetener extracted from the plant of the same name.

Sucralose

Contains zero calories. Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar.

  1. This articles is WRONG! Their is plenty of evidence that aspartame causes serious adverse health effects, most importantly….. CANCER! I just recently read an article about it, with links to reputable sources. That article was Written back in 2005, and now even more studies are being published in more reputable medical journals. It makes me wonder, why now, in 2014, I can’t buy a pack of gum that doesn’t contain aspartame. Even some hospitals are doing away with sugary drinks and filling their vending machines with CANCER causing ASPARTAME!! I bet I know who those hospitals are getting their hefty donations from!
    Oh Well, what do you expect, when CANCER is a HUGE money maker. Why would they want to find a cure, or better yet, prevent it? My guess is someone is paying big money to keep us consuming it! After all, wasn’t it money that finally got the FDA, after they previously had reservations about its safety, to Change their greedy minds & regard it as SAFE for human consumption?
